It was a bad distribution upgrade to 11.04 on my machine. I've run "dpkg --configure -a".
Still have pidgin main menu problem.

Having the same issue, running 11.04 clean install. When the buddy list is focused, and the mouse is placed on top of the panel, the menu does not populate anything but the application name. See screenshot. Please advise on what logs I should acquire.

Bottom line is, global menu bar works for individual conversations, apparently, but not always for the Pidgin buddy list (the one that matters when you want to actually configure Pidgin.

I can confirm on 11.04.
Menubar is hidden for main window.
Menubar works well for chat window.

I might add that this makes it impossible to add, remove, or edit accounts. Not good.

work around:

open an xterm:

$ UBUNTU_MENUPROXY=pidgin
$ pidgin

do your configurations. exit. open pidgin as usual.

the problem with UBUNTU_MENUPROXY=pidgin is that for some reason you can't hide the contact window. The launcher dock will jump the window right at your face as soon as it goes away.

@gcb workaround does not work for me, I get:

user@user-desktop:~$ pidgin
Exiting because another libpurple client is already running.

@Eugene: you probably have to quit the running Pidgin instance first.

I also have this problem. Sometimes I do get the menu for the main window though, I think it happens when the system has just booted and the main window is shown for the first time. When I close the main window and then reopen it through the the little "social menu" or whatever it's called I can't get it to show the menu for the main window anymore.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

This bug also affects me (Ubuntu 11-10, 64-bit). It's sporadic -- sometimes Unity will show the menu bar for the main pidgin window when it has focus, and sometimes it will not. Sometimes killing the pidgin process and restarting will make the menu appear, and sometimes it won't. I cannot find any reliable pattern to reproduce the bug, but it does occur frequently.

For everyone else reporting, were you all using 64-bit, or are some of you seeing the bug in 32-bit, too?

I suspect Unity more than Pidgin.

I'm seeing this bug in 64-bit 11.10 as well. For me it isn't sporadic. There is never, ever a time when Pidgin's menu will show up in the main app menu. This is on a mostly fresh 11.10 install.

The only thing I've done is set com.canonical.Unity.Panel -> systray-whitelist to ['all'], because I don't want a ton of apps to break just to get monochromatic icons up there.

Also, removing the appmenu packages fixed this problem. Though if you love the global menu, that's a drawback.

sudo sudo apt-get remove appmenu-gtk appmenu-gtk3 appmenu-qt

FWIW, it works for me in 32 bits running a 12.04 "nightly":

Pidgin 1:2.10.1-1ubuntu1
appmenu-gtk3 0.3.90-0ubuntu1

For some time it was alright, but after one boot up it no longer shows main menu, but conversation menu works
