Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy. Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

security vulnerability: yes → no
visibility: private → public

I started having the same problem under Ubuntu 11.04 64 bits. I have Windows 7 on dual-boot and installed Pidgin on it too. Both MSN and Gtalk work perfectly there, but only Gtalk works on Ubuntu.

This problem started yesterday (06-16-2011); Pidgin used to work with no trouble until then.

Version: Pidgin 2.7.11 (libpurple 2.7.11)
Uname: Linux 2.6.38-10-generic x86_64

Today I found a way to solve it. Just had to change proxy configurations from "GNOME" to "environment".

Thank you anyway.
