Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

You may search for accounts information in your ~/.purple/accounts.xml file (do not send it)

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

I don't know if this is the solution or workaround; but after doing the following i was able to "save my account settings":
after receiving the note from Led Shark; i tried to find the accounts.xml in my ~/.purple directory. I could not find this file in that directory. On further checking I noticed that the owner and group of the .purple directory is "root" which is why system was not able to save accounts.xml in this directory. I changed the owner of the directory to my userid and recreated account settings. this time i could find the accounts.xml file in this directory.
to be doubly sure; i re-booted and ...wow.. the account settings were saved!
....
i am not sure if the .purple directory is "supposed" to have owner as root but i guess since the directory in the $HOME directory of my userid; my userid should be the owner.

1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem,

opened pidgin and added my gmail and yahoo account on being asked to add account.connected successfully.
exited.
atarted pidgin from menu.
pidgin again asked to add account as it did on first run. did not save the earlier saved account information.

2. the behavior you expected, and

i had expected it to save my account information

3 what i did..

went to home directory. view hidden files. .purple directory had a lock on it.
opened nautilus as root.
changed the owner and group of the .purple directory to user.
exit nautilus.
started pidgin again.
prompted to add account as on first run.
entered account...both yahoo and gmail....could connect with yahoo but NOT gmail.
exited and started again...could connect with both.(was not asked to add account info...it was saved...as expected.

The info is only disappearing sometimes now Usuall when I close Pidgin and reopen it the account info is still there. Also, when I reboot, it is usually still there. But twice now, it has disappeared and Pidgin thinks it is the first time it has been ran.

I did not have a lock in my ~/.purple folder, but it was owned by root user.

drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4.0K 2009-06-06 00:02 .purple

(the folder here only had plugins folder with a single file)

For that reason, the application did not seem to be able to write in that folder.

By changing this configuration, as manishmahabir specified earlier, with the following command, I could solve this issue:

sudo chown user:user ~/.purple/

(where user is your current username, or the username logged in)

The result is:

drwxr-xr-x 3 user user 4.0K 2009-06-06 00:02 .purple

Once I started the application again, the files were successfully saved (my personal accounts, etc).

Thank you so much for the reply. I fixed it for my self and had not
check my mail box since.

I accidentally used "sudo pidgin" and found that it did remember
my account settings, then I made a copy of the setting file and
remove ./purple and made a new one. It worked!

Thanks again and I am having fun with Ubuntu.

Chiu-Cheng Liu

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test a current, supported, Ubuntu version. Thanks in advance.

The problem is most likely caused by running pidgin via 'sudo -s'. For this, and many security reasons usespace applications should do everything possible to not run as root without some sort of confirmation.
