Bug Description

Binary package hint: pidgin

A new conversation window or tab is created when "Ctrl+M" is used to send a message to a buddy. But focus is not transferred to this window, and instead goes back to the buddy list. As a result, one has to switch to the new window before typing the message. To be specific, this happens when you press "Ctrl+M" in the buddy list.

Ubuntu release: 8.04
Package version for Pidgin: 1:2.4.1-1ubuntu2

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. In Hardy-Backports there is the version 1:2.4.3-0ubuntu1~hardy1 which has this issue resolved (at least for me). Could you please try that version?

Tested this with 1:2.4.3-0ubuntu1~hardy1. But the behaviour is still the same. The new conversation is not given focus. Also tried turning off tabbed conversations, but still no effect.

I am experiencing the same bug with Pidgin 2.6.3 on Ubuntu Karmic. Also, when Pidgin creates a new conversation window when someone messages me, it appears in the foreground but does not have focus. This is always very confusing and often leads to me screwing up something in whatever window does have focus. Ideally it should either be created in the foreground and not have focus or it should appear in the foreground with focus.

I meant to say, "Ideally it should either be created in the *background* and not have focus or it should appear in the foreground with focus." D'oh.

This also happens when other application opens up a pidgin window (Kupfer in my case).

When I search for a contact and open a conversation it doen't have focus.

I opened a bug for Kupfer but was told that it is indeed a Pidgin bug.
