Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these instuctions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

I ran into a similar issue after attempting to set up a new Microsoft LCS/OCS account. I don't know the exact configuration settings I put for the account to cause it, but who cares.

Pidgin would immediately crash with the segment fault on launch. Since I knew I was messing with that account I edited the ~/.purple/accounts.xml file and changed the auto login setting for that account to 0. This allowed me to start pidgin without an issue and then reconfigure the account correctly.

Others may want to try the same thing, perhaps disable the auto-login for all accounts if you don't know which might be causing it.

Change the auto-login to 0 instead of 1:

<setting name='auto-login' type='bool'>0</setting>
