I can't duplicate this with Hardy as released. If this is still broken for you, please let me know or re-open this ticket.

You are right. The upgrade from Gutsy seems to have a problem and I've to apt-get --remove purge pidgin pidgin-data and reinstall them after that to fix the problem.
