pidgin hangs after typing long messages in message window

Pidgin 1:2.14.8-1ubuntu2 in jammy (22.04) is affected by https://issues.imfreedom.org/issue/PIDGIN-17413, i.e. writing long messages that require multiple reflows will eventually hang pidgin, and requires killing the process.

Backporting the fix from upstream https://keep.imfreedom.org/pidgin/pidgin/rev/0079467afee4 and applying it to the package (which applies cleanly apart from slight offsets) makes the issue go away, without any observed side effects (I have been running this for a while).

I assume updating to 2.14.9 would have the same effect (which includes the fix).

This is technically not ubuntu, but only based on ubuntu (jammy / 22.04). But the issue is in the package itself, not caused by any Mint specific changes, as the package is used verbatim from ubuntu as indicated by the below output:
