Binary package hint: pidgin-libnotify
The new email notifications are not displayed in the notification area. The are shown just in the pidgin windows itself. I've tested this by sending emails to my Yahoo and Gmail accounts in the following situations:
1. Pidgin was closed (clicked on X and he is present in the notification area), is not on the taskbar.
2. Pidgin was minimized and shown on the taskbar. (in this case Pidgin glows in the taskbar)
3. Pidgin was opened on the desktop (see screen-shot)
An all three three situations I didn't receive any notification message in the notification area for the emails I've received.

The notification within Pidgin itself is unreadable b/c of the theme used in Ubuntu now, but that's a separate issue.
I tested this with Alex, so confirming as Medium, as this is a regression and normally would be the workaround for Empathy (the Ubuntu IM core app) not showing email notifications (as it's not implemented) - see bug #332355.
