Bug Description

Binary package hint: pidgin

With the new notification-daemon "notify-osd" running and the pidgin-plugin "buddy-status notifications" (by Christian Hammond <email address hidden>) enabled this rendering-bug can be reproduced.

1.) Ubuntu release used
Description: Ubuntu jaunty (development branch), Release: 9.04

2.) Version of pidgin used
pidgin-1:2.5.3-0ubuntu3

3.) What's expected to happen
All icons used by pidgin and its plugins should yield the same visual crispness. No icon used should stand out by being too fuzzy.

4.) What happened instead
IM-protocol logo-icons shown in the new notification-bubbles (displayed by "notify-osd") when a buddy logs in or out are too fuzzy (read: low res). This "breaks" the visual fidelity of notifications, because other icons used in notifications usually come in the form of SVGs or higher res. bitmap icons.

IM-protocol logo-icon affected are the ones for ICQ, AIM, MSN, XMPP/Jabber and Yahoo.

ted: is pidgin able to send high-res icons or should we fallback to the generic buddy icon?
mpt: can you confirm what kind of icons to use in this case?

Last week we discussed using the generic buddy icon, possibly overlaid with the protocol icon as an emblem in the corner. (I remember asking: If we don't show the protocol icon for people who do have their own avatar, why should we show it for people who don't? But I don't remember if that discussion reached a conclusion.)

We found that there are higher resolution icons available, and I'm going to make sure that they get to notify-osd. The overlay didn't really look right.

This bug was fixed in the package pidgin-libnotify - 0.14-1ubuntu6

---------------
pidgin-libnotify (0.14-1ubuntu6) jaunty; urgency=low

  * /debian/patches/indicate.patch:
    * Updating the names of the append and truncation hints to
match the new version of the spec. (LP: #341565)
    * Change the IRC private messages to not have the same name
      twice in the notification.
    * Change the chat room notifications to tell you the person
first rather than the room first.
    * Switch the protocol icons to use large icons instead of using
      the smaller icons. (LP: #333497)
    * Change the indicator types so that the count doesn't appear
in the indicator applet along with the items.
    * Only block buddy list hiding when called from the indictor
      applet. (LP: #333745)

This bug isn't fixed. Protocol icons still appear blurry.

I'm using Ubuntu Jaunty, and pidgin-libnotify 0.14-1ubuntu8
