package phpmyadmin 4:3.3.2-1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed pre-removal script returned error exit status 1

When using "configure using debconfig-common", the gui installer never asks for the root MySQL password, then fails to login and provides a dropdown to retry/abort/ignore. The text mode installer runs fine.
