Bug Description

A new phpmyadmin installation is failing:

[Mon Apr 11 21:22:20.975091 2016] [:error] [pid 25986] [client ::1:50410] PHP Fatal error: require_once(): Failed opening required '/usr/share/php/php-gettext/gettext.inc' (include_path='.:/usr/share/php') in /usr/share/phpmyadmin/libraries/select_lang.lib.php on line 477

Installing the php-gettext package resolved this error.

I created my own package with "phpmyadmin" and "php-gettext" as "Pre-Depends".
The "php-gettext" package still will not be installed automatically.
"apt-get install php-gettext" works fine, really strange.

I have just sent Debian our small non-upstream delta in Xenial, and once that is accepted, we can sync php7.0 in Yakkety. At that point, I will backport the fix for gettext as mentioned here and will file an SRU bug.

Apologies for taking a long time to get back to this! I have submitted a build to the PPA at: https://launchpad.net/~nacc/+archive/ubuntu/lp1569128 which attempts to backport the fix from Debian/Yakkety to the Xenial version. Once it finishes building, @Chip or anyone else affected, could you please test that version (7.0.4-7ubuntu2.2~ppa1).

Thanks,
Nish

Sorry, my backport had a bug, uploaded a new fix to the same PPA, 7.0.4-7ubuntu2.2~ppa2, please test using that version, once available.

As part of bug 1569609, I have created a microrelease-update test version at: https://launchpad.net/~nacc/+archive/ubuntu/lp1569609, which includes the fix for this bug. If anyone affected could also test that version (7.0.8-0ubuntu1~ppa1), that would be very helpful!

Chris J Arges (arges) wrote : Please test proposed package

Hello Chip, or anyone else affected,

Accepted php7.0 into xenial-proposed. The package will build now and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/php7.0/7.0.8-0ubuntu0.16.04.1 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug, mentioning the version of the package you tested, and change the tag from verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing will help us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in advance!

Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot (crichton) wrote : [php7.0/xenial] possible regression found

As a part of the Stable Release Updates quality process a search for Launchpad bug reports using the version of php7.0 from xenial-proposed was performed and bug 1598166 was found. Please investigate this bug report to ensure that a regression will not be created by this SRU. In the event that this is not a regression remove the "verification-failed" tag from this bug report and add the tag "bot-stop-nagging" to bug 1598166 (not this bug). Thanks!

php7.0-common 7.0.8-0ubuntu0.16.04.1 no longer provides 'php-gettext' (but does provide php7.0-gettext). In contrast, 7.0.4-7ubuntu2 provides both php-gettext and php7.0-gettext. Marking as verified.
