From the look, you seem to be using some third party theme which probably does not support latest version.

I just installed it with "sudo apt-get install phpmyadmin" and I did nothing (explicit) to install any third party theme.

If some third party theme not compatible with the version of phpmyadmin got installed automagically, then it must be some packaging issue.
