Hi JNH,
unfortunately this seems like a (common) configuration error to me.
I can't derive a good hint for you from your description, but checking search engines shows me plenty of links like:

https://forum.owncloud.org/viewtopic.php?t=33005
https://serverfault.com/questions/517190/nginx-1-fastcgi-sent-in-stderr-primary-script-unknown
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/35261922/debugging-the-famous-fastcgi-sent-in-stderr-primary-script-unknown-while-re

With the data provides here it is not actionable as a bug in Ubuntu since I'd not even know where to start.
Could you follow the links above and similar ones.
If you find that it is a config errors then other users might benefit from you stating what fixed it for you.

If you eventually find a bug in the actual package update this bug here and set it back to new.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.

Since it seems likely to me that this is a local configuration problem, rather than a bug in Ubuntu, I'm marking this bug as Incomplete.

If indeed this is a local configuration problem, you can find pointers to get help for this sort of problem here: http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community

Or if you believe that this is really a bug, then you may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem, explain why you believe this is a bug in Ubuntu rather than a problem specific to your system, and then change the bug status back to New.

Changed in php7.2 (Ubuntu):
status: New → Incomplete
