Hi Stas, thank you for taking the time to file this bug report and put together those packaging changes!

Marking as In Progress, tagging needs-packaging, Importance set to Wishlist, assigning You, Stas.

Stas, if you can follow the procedures for DistributedDevelopment here:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DistributedDevelopment

you'll want to make your branch based on

lp:ubuntu/natty/php5

And then you can propose merging here, and request a review from ubuntu-sponsors

Note that with such a large set of changes, it may be best to collaborate directly with the Debian php maintainers rather than us importing this version before them. There may already be work done in their git branches. Please check here for updates:

http://packages.qa.debian.org/p/php5.html

Changed in php5 (Ubuntu):
status: New → In Progress
assignee: nobody → Stas Verberkt (legolas)
importance: Undecided → Wishlist
tags: added: needs-packaging
summary: - PHP 5.3.5 is available.
+ [needs-packaging] PHP 5.3.5 is available.

<debian php maintainer hat on>
Hi, php5 5.3.5 will be uploaded to Debian after squeeze is released.

As usual we always appreciate any help with php5 packaging, but help with triaging and fixing bugs is more needed than just updating to new upstream versions.

So, (and this applies to anybody out there) if you feel like spending some free brain cycles, please open http://bugs.debian.org/php5 and test bugs, find fixes, cherry-pick from upstream svn, etc. This will be much appreciated, since we are always in need of help.

</debian php maintainer hat on>

I've created a branch based on the Ubuntu natty branch:
lp:~legolas/ubuntu/natty/php5/5.3.5

I'm actually also a Debian user, but I don't know how I would create such a branch for Debian. Altough I suspect that porting this is not that much work, and the actual work will be in the testing phases.

Shortly after this comment, I will push:
lp:~legolas/ubuntu/natty/php-mcrypt/5.3.5

And yet again I am going to repeat myself - pushing new upstream versions to repository is not that important as triaging and fixing existing reported bugs on php5.

f.e. it would be great if you could search for a solution of http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=602812, which is caused by one (or maybe more) of our Debian patches. That would be a great help.

This bug is tagged needs-packaging which identifies it as a request for a new package in Ubuntu. As a part of the managing needs-packaging bug reports specification, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/Specs/NeedsPackagingBugs, all needs-packaging bug reports have Wishlist importance. Subsequently, I'm setting this bug's status to Wishlist.

Hi Stas,

Thanks for you work on this - I would really urge you to rather contribute patches and work with the Debian PHP Maintainers team. PHP is fairly important to many users, and many applications are build against it (phpldapdamin, phpmyadmin ++ many others).

I don't think it would be in our best interest to push 5.3.5 ahead of Debian at this moment. Please look at working with them about getting 5.3.5 there first.

Thanks

I'm not sure the best way to go about this, but this package (5.3.5-1 in debian) will need to be synced before freeze so that we can have php5-fpm back into natty. Right now, php5-fpm is not available (probably since 5.3.3-2).

It appears that 5.3.5 has recently been uploaded into Natty (https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/php5). Can someone confirm?
