PHP 5.3 packages have been uploaded to Debian experimental & will possibly get into Karmic after some testing.

I pulled the debian source of php5.3 and build it inside my ppa, it works :-D

Just a note, I'd definitely be excited to see PHP 5.3+ in Karmic as it includes some pretty cutting edge features!

Hopefully we make it in time.

I've been reading up on:

Great job coming up with a php 5.3 suhosin patch so soon Raphael, thanks a lot for that.

It would be very to have late static binding (, 20% perfomance boost, namespaces, closures, etc) in Karmic already.

I think it may even convince some PHP people to give Ubuntu a try, if they're stuck on < 5.3 versions with their distro of choice.

On the other hand, some things really are a bit different from 5.2:
http://kevin.vanzonneveld.net/techblog/article/prepare_for_php_53/
(sorry for the plug)

..and people may not want to upgrade their webservers to Karmic in fear of breaking their PHP apps; currently running fine on Jaunty.

Most of the resulting impact can be hidden/minimized by tinkering with some ini settings (still enable shorttags, hide deprecated messages), but the quest rises if that's the way to fly. It will only make it harder for PHPers to upgrade to future version that will totally drop support for some functions & features.

And of course credits to Arnold Daniels who made the patch.

I wonder, could this call for a separate PHP version inside Ubuntu so that you could both install:
 - php5 -> php5.2
 - php5.3

From the Karmic repositories?

Giving people some time to:
 - run their Jaunty sites on Karmic without any problems. Upgrade is seamless.
 - test-drive php5.3 the way it will be shipped with Karmic+1 (this could be uncompromising: short tags off by default, and everything, making it future-proof)

Obviously this excludes the LTS folks who won't face the PHP compatibility issues until April 2010 - if they upgrade immediately, or - 2013 if they really want to stretch it.

People it would be great, if you could contact debian php maintainers before doing double work in Ubuntu.

There are more known problems in php5.3 from experimental which needed to be fixed and are causing segfaults (timezone, gd).

We are currently thinking about pushing php 5.3 packages to unstable, so we have some time before next debian release to iron out all bugs.

There is a public git repository and since we lack of manpower these days (mainly because me and sean are burnt out), we would gladly welcome new blood (as well formated patchsets are welcomed too).

Chuck,

maybe you could pull 5.3.1 from experimental?

5.3.1-2 is on it's way to experimental with all changes from 5.2.x branch merged and few more bugfixes (including one from Ubuntu).

I've build PHP 5.3.1 in my PPA and it works. Will PHP 5.3.x be included in Lucid before feature freeze? It would be a big benefit if it can get into this LTS release.

Please pull php 5.3.1-3 from unstable.

You definitely don't want to have 5.2.x in LTS release, and since LTSImportFreeze it due to Feb 11, you can still make it.

5.3.2-1 is on it's way. I recommend FFE for lucid, since MediaWiki is broken with 5.3.1.
