Bug Description

While already fixed in upstream and Debian testing (4.0.1-4), the fix has not been applied to Ubuntu packages yet, especially not to those for 16.04 LTS. Chances are high that a large amount of servers is affected by this bug.

Ubuntu version: 16.04.1 LTS
Package version: 4.0.0~alpha2-3build1

Memory consumption of the pdns server increases over time, as the Postgres result objects are not free'd correctly for transactions. This has been addressed in upstream and both by Debian maintainers.

Since there is no activity for months on this bug, I've manually installed the .deb's from zesty (17.04) which provide a fixed version of pdns. While this is not optimal as the packages cannot be updated using apt, it's the only Ubuntu'ish way to get fixed packages running.

We workaround it by installing the packages provided by powerdns directly ( https://repo.powerdns.com/ ). Unfortunately they don't have an official stable release with the fix too so we are running with a nightly build.
