Bug Description

The Ubuntu Software Center page for Desktop Preferences does not describe the correct package. Instead, it describes the PCMan File Manager. System is Xubuntu 14.04.1 64-bit.

Thanks for your report.

To be honest I don't understand which page for desktop preferences you are talking about. Can you please describe how to get to it.

Hi Gunnar,

Open Ubuntu Software Center and search for Desktop Preferences. The
description for Desktop Preferences in Software Center is "Change desktop
wallpapers and behavior of desktop manager."

Under this title and description on the page for Desktop Preferences is
data for PCMan File Manager. I copied the web link from the Edit menu and
got http://apt.ubuntu.com/p/pcmanfm

Desktop Preferences is used in Xubuntu to set desktop background and menu
and icon behavior.

Thanks for your help. Please write back with any additional questions.

Best regards,

Robert Thompson

I see, thanks. I think the package you describe is xfdesktop4 whose name in the .desktop file is "Desktop" only. So if you search for desktop in Software Center, you'll find it in the presented list.

You found the pcmanfm package, which provides Lubuntu's file manager and desktop preferences tool. The latter has a .desktop file with the name "Desktop Preferences". ;)

I can't tell if one or both should modify their .desktop files to prevent this confusion. Forwarding this bug report to the maintainers of respective package by changing the affected package.

Xfdesktop's .desktop file is used in the xfce4-settings-manager which is why it's rather vague. Changing it would have to look consistent with the other applications embedded there.
One fix action would be if the software center supported appdata (or appsteam?) which xfdesktop could ship.
