Bug Description

Binary package hint: partman

This sounds a bit like the race Colin mentioned to me earlier today (bug 94410),, which I think bug 87921 might also be a dupe of, but I'm unsure about both.

I tried a guided resize on the alternate CD, and it immediately failed with "An error occurred while writing the changes to the storage devices. The resize operation is aborted." (VMWare screenshot attached)

This was on build 20070322.1, which has partman-partitioning version 47ubuntu3, with the fix for bug 94410. partman and syslog logs are attached.

Fabio's problem (I'm not certain whether it's identical to Matt's) is that the filesystem he's resizing has probably never been checked; at any rate resize2fs emits a message saying to run e2fsck -f. This suggests a workaround for the release notes.

I tried this on an 8gb ext3 VirtualBox disk where I had just installed Kubuntu desktop and I got the same error as Matt.

I then booted a Live CD, reformated the whole drive as ntfs. The alternate install then proceeded without complaint.

I have a patch in hand, but I think it's too risky for beta. I've added text to the release notes, and will fix this after beta (unless overruled).

partman-partitioning (47ubuntu4) feisty; urgency=low

  * Run e2fsck before resizing ext2/ext3 partitions (LP: #94647).
  * Add progress bar (albeit trivial) for NTFS resizing.
