2005-08-27 daily install CD(?) stops at "resize /part" step

Bug #20512 reported by Hervé Cauwelier (bug tracking) on 2005-08-28

partman-partitioning (Ubuntu)

Bug Description

At the partionning step, I choose the first option, "resize /part and use
available space", but the installer stopped. All I have is the blue screen with
the cursor at the last line, which is of light grey background.

Some post-mortem status:

List of last processes:

S /bin/sh /lib/partman/auto.d/99initial_auto
S /bin/sh /lib/partman/automatically_partition/10resize

Last output on VC 3 (personnal notes in square brackets):

FATAL: Error inserting floppy (/lib/[...]/floppy.ko): Device or resource busy
[I think this one was printed at module time and because I don't have a floppy
driver on the laptop]
File descriptor 3 left open
File descriptor 4 left open
File descriptor 5 left open
File descriptor 6 left open
  No matching physical volumes found
File descriptor 3 left open
File descriptor 4 left open
File descriptor 5 left open
File descriptor 6 left open
  No volume groups found
Reading all physical volumes. This may take a while... [Indeed!]

Output on VC 4 (personnal notes in square brackets):

Menu item 'partman-base' selected
configure partman-base, status: 2
configure libc6, status: 0
virtual package libc6
configure libparted1.6-12, status: 0
virtual package libparted1.6-12
configure harddrive-detection, status: 0
virtual package harddrive-detection

Let's try typing Ctrl+C and the installer goes on: "Starting up the partioner"
but stops at 52%

New (relevant) processes:

udpkg --configure --force-configure partman-base
/bin/sh /var/lib/dpkg/info/partman-base.postinst conf
/bin/sh /bin/partman
/bin/sh -e /lib/partman/init.d/35dump

Nothing more on VC 3 and 4.

Ctrl+c has no effect, and by the time I type this description, nothing changed.

I previously installed Hoary for testing in the course of the Laptop Testing team.

The md5sum is good and the CD-RW burnt at the low speed of 4x.

This is a Toshiba Satellite Pro L10 provided by Canonical, feel free to ask me
anything to do, even if it would erase the entire disk!

I can't reproduce this, but the resize process takes a very long time, and seems to be lacking
a progress indicator. Can you please try again with a newer daily and see if you can reproduce this?
You can probably see if it's just hung or progressing by checking if the load average is changing, by
running cat /proc/loadavg on tty2 repeatedly. (I was resizing ext3, I'm not sure if that's relevant to the
missing progress bar problem).
