can't play .avi from gvfs network shares

Bug Description
Parole and Totem give popup gstreamer backend error, VLC and gnome-mpv/mpv simply crash, when trying to play AVI files from a GVFS mount. Can reproduce in Lubuntu and Xubuntu, 32 and 64 bit, installed and Live.

Update
The problem seems to occur when connecting to shares on a Synology NAS. Shared files on an actual Windows box play normally. Suspect it has something to do with Synology's Samba implementation.
