I did a mass reinstall just to see what problems got thrown up, and I think this installation issue was one of them.

Well, I wandered past this bug, looking for something else, and I see it's a dupe of fixed bug 703230. The culprit was this, in DpkgTerminalLog .txt:
Preparing to replace libpango1.0-0 1.28.3-3 (using .../libpango1. 0-0_1.28. 3-4ubuntu1_ i386.deb) ... doc/libpango1. 0-0': Is a directory
rm: cannot remove `/usr/share/
