Enhancement request: Get article counts for newsgroups

It would be nice to be able to get newsgroup article counts without actually downloading article headers. I remember this feature in Xnews from my days on Windows many years back. Also, I know that when retrieving headers, Pan seems to give a fairly accurate progress bar with a percentage number. Therefore, it seems to me that it must be possible to call up the total article count in any given newsgroup.

The main consideration is one's monthly download limit, where downloading headers eats into that limit. One might be wary, for different reasons, of both groups with low article numbers as well as of those with overwhelming numbers. Either way, just getting the article counts at start-up of all of your subscribed (or otherwise selected) groups would be an excellent feature.
