Authentication Failed at Login

Bug Description
I am using Ubuntu 8.04. I downloaded and installed Linux PAM 1.0.0 . Then I wrote a program as easy as containing only pam_start and pam_authenticate using its libraries. I shut down the computer after that. Later, I started it and I could not login. When I enter my username it says : "Authentication failed". It says it on absolutely everything I write including "root". I can't even get to the point to input my password. Another interesting thing is when I am looged as a root in the failsafe mode and type "passwd <myusername>", it says "Passwd: Permission denied".
Please, help!
