Bug Description

Binary package hint: padevchooser

Hi all,
 I'm on Intrepid and followed instructions to get over to pulseaudio and while the login buzzer worked, exaile (the music player) didn't .

While trying to use padevchooser I get this :-

shirish@Mugglewille:~$ padevchooser

** (padevchooser:9062): WARNING **: pa_browser_new() failed.

The version in Intrepid is 0.9.3-2ubuntu3

I'm on kernel 2.6.26-1 and there is possibility it might be a reason as well.

I changed stuff using the guide at

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=789578

but still don't get anything :(

Hrm. Fixed this by restarting avahi-daemon. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/avahi/+bug/116984 rearing its ugly head again?

I am pretty sure this has something to do with enabling the network access and discovery via paprefs.

avahi-daemon won't start if .local is defined in dns, which causes padevcooser to not start

In my installation of Ubuntu 8.04, there was no startup link between /etc/init.d/avahi-daemon and my default runlevel directory /etc/rc2.d/ therefore padevchooser would fail to start with error message as above. Creating the link has permanently rectified the issue for me - code: $sudo ln -s /etc/init.d/avahi-daemon /etc/rc2d/S24avahi-daemon.
If my contribution is in the wrong place I'm sorry but I am new to Launchpad.

PS Oops I recall that I previously disabled avahi-daemon, and so the issue noted by others is in all probability a different one.

My network provider is using .local domains:

 * Starting Avahi mDNS/DNS-SD Daemon avahi-daemon
 * avahi-daemon disabled because there is a unicast .local domain

and I get an error when starting padevchooser:

$ padevchooser

** (padevchooser:13199): WARNING **: pa_browser_new() failed.

I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 with latest updates.

Hello,

padevchooser is refusing to start because it relies on Avahi to provide some network services discovery.

The reason Avahi is not working is explained here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/avahi/+bug/327362

But the short answer is:

# vi /etc/default/avahi-daemon

make sure the line that reads
AVAHI_DAEMON_DETECT_LOCAL=1
becomes
AVAHI_DAEMON_DETECT_LOCAL=0

This change avoids a check done at boot which prevents Avahi from running. For immediate pleasure, do
# /etc/init.d/avahi-daemon start

which should start the service without any error. Once Avahi is working, PulseAudio will work as expected.
This last statement is no longer necessary, as the Avahi will now start on each reboot.

Thanks everybody for your work!
