It relies on GRUB to *boot* them, but detection is done via a completely separate component called os-prober. Could you please attach /var/log/installer/syslog and /var/log/installer/partman to this bug, following the directions in http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingUbiquity/AttachingLogs?
