[MIR] optipng

Bug #669457 reported by Martin Pitt on 2010-11-01

optipng (Ubuntu)

Bug Description

Binary package hint: optipng

Rationale: We want to integrate optipng into pkgbinarymangler to reduce the size of PNG images, which will save us 5.5 MB of CD space.

I went through https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuMainInclusionRequirements and confirm that the package meets the requirements. It is well maintained in Debian and has zero bug reports in Debian and Ubuntu at the time of this writing.

Unfortunately the package does not have a test suite on its own, but I'll write a script that verifies that the end result of original and compressed image are identical (by converting both to PPM and checking for identical files).

As a former member of ubuntu-mir I'm reasonably sure that this will be approved, so I pre-promoted it so that we can start optimizing PNGs early. The earlier we start, the fewer packages we need to rebuild just for this later on.

I wrote a test script which verifies correctness and ran it against a few thousand PNG files in my system, which all worked fine:

  find /usr/share/ -name '*.png' | ./optipng-check

I forwarded the test script to upstream:

Test script also sent to Debian: http://bugs.debian.org/602091
