Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

When I open the attached Word document in Writer, I cannot select any text due to an overlapping frame. When the frame is deleted text can be selected.
No frame is shown in Word 2007 and text can be selected fine.
OO either adds a spurious frame or does not handle the frame in the same way as Word 2007 (eg. in a way that text can be select through it)
See attached screenshots

Upstream says that the frame on page 1 needs to be removed. I can not figure out how to do so, do you know what he is talking about leighman?

No idea, I'm afraid!
Evidently whoever made it has done something noobish, but it works fine in Word 2007.
Libreoffice it is!

Affected document

Only tested on Linux but presumably affects other OSs.
Cannot select any text on the attached file; cursor just defaults to top corner
Presumably some silly non-standard formatting has gone on but text is selectable in Word 2007 running in Wine

we had a chat on #ubuntu-bugs about this. It turns out OO opens the document with a large frame overlaying part of the first page (I did not look at the other pages). See the attachment oo-framed.png.

Now, if the original doc on Word does not show that, then this is a bug on how OO is rendering this frame (either creating or positioning).

screenshot of the selected frame

I selected a frame, see the attached screenshot. Then I was able to move it using mounse to another location. The text under the frame was editable.

It is possible that MS Office shows the frames in different order, so the problematic one does not hide the text.

[This is an automated message.]
There are no new official OpenOffice.org releases in Ubuntu packaging anymore => Won't Fix

If the problem persists, please mark this bug as "also affects project Libreoffice" or "also affects distribution Libreoffice (Ubuntu)" if that has not happened already.

Please leave references to upstream OpenOffice.org bugs in place to allow cross pollination.

NOT reproducible anymore with LibreOffice 3.5.3.2 (Build-ID: 235ab8a-3802056-4a8fed3-2d66ea8-e241b80), German langpack installed, on MacOS X 10.6.8 German UI. If I open the sample document I can immediately edit the text, as expected.

@leighman,
@everybody else:
Could you please test if the issue is fixed for you, too? Then we could close this bug report ... Or is the issue still reproducible on Linux?

This is a Writer issue, therefore changed the 'Component' field accordingly.

Thank you very much for your fast response! One more bug closed makes it easier to find the important (persistent) bugs ...
