Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

I opened a .doc from an evolution mail attachement and modified it. To save it permanently (i.e. not in ~/.evolition/...) I selected the "save as ..." menu entry. In the dialog I changed the name and and created and selected a subdirectory of my home directory. After pressing the "Save" button I was asked whether I wanted to keep the .doc format or save in .odf format.

After choosing the .odf option (i.e. I changed the format from .doc to .odf), all the selections that I had done before (file name, directory) were lost. So pressing the "Save" button once again leads to storing the file in the original temporary location (~/.evolution/...).

When I did this the first time I just wondered that the directory was empty after I thought I had stored the file there ...

An easy way to loose hours of work ....

Documents opened directly from email attachments (e.g. in Thunderbird) edit files that have been put in /tmp. If the edited version is saved back there, it is not just a matter of the document being in the wrong place - it will be lost after a reboot.

Note this applies to both native dialogs and when "Use OpenOffice.org dialogs" is selected.
Also applies to lucid.

This is a usability bug, especially for naiive users.
The file should be saved with the new extension, in the selected directory, without returning to the Save dialog.

Note this is basically the same report for Lucid as bug 481592 was for Jaunty
