Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

determine the baseline CPU usage by process Xorg (here, 10%)

open a blank OpenOffice Calc spreadsheet

select a cell; the cell border becomes highlighted with a blinking dotted line

the CPU usage by process Xorg increases to 20%

selecting a group of cells (so that the blinking border perimeter is longer, see attached screenshot) can bring the Xorg CPU usage as high as 60%

[This is an automatic notification.]

This bug was reported against an earlier version of Ubuntu, can you test if it still occurs on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx)?

Please note we also provide technical support for older versions of Ubuntu, but not in the bug tracker. Instead, to raise the issue through normal support channels, please see:

    http://www.ubuntu.com/support

If you are the original reporter and can still reproduce the issue on Lucid, please run the following command to refresh the report:

  apport-collect 568892

Bear in mind that you may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe repository. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your bug report.

If you are not the original reporter, please file a new bug report, so we can work with you as the original reporter instead (you can reference bug 568892 in your report if you think it may be related):

  ubuntu-bug openoffice.org

If by chance you can no longer reproduce the issue on Lucid or if you feel it is no longer relevant, please mark the bug report 'Fix Released' or 'Invalid' as appropriate, at the following URL:

  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/568892

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.

The problem still occurs on lucid.
I noticed that in the steps to reproduce I omitted one step, i.e. copy to clipboard.

The correct sequence with updated CPU usages for lucid is:
determine the baseline CPU usage by process Xorg (here, 5-7%)
open a blank OpenOffice Calc spreadsheet
select a cell and press CTRL+C to copy in the clipboard; the cell border becomes highlighted with a blinking dotted line
the CPU usage by process Xorg increases to 13-15%

selecting a group of cells (so that the blinking border perimeter is longer, see attached screenshot) can bring the Xorg CPU usage as high as 70%

I can also reproduce the issue on i686. Every time I copy and paste a range of cells the X process goes to 100%. The CPU comsumption dissapears when I close Openoffice.

I am also affected by this issue on Lucid x64. If you need logs / data tell me what and how. I can replicate it by:
Open a spreadsheet
Select a range
Cut to clipboard

At this point, Xorg is 96-100% on one CPU

Often, when I paste the data and deselect the cells, CPU usage returns to normal, but sometimes Calc needs closing.

I can confirm this bug as described in #8. Furthermore, it is also present in Impress. It happens with any select and copy operation involving tables.

Closing Klipper does not help either.

Should be marked as severe, as this makes OOo close to unusable.

This seems to help (havent tested thoroughly yet): openoffice.org -> view -> graphics output -> use anti-aliasing (uncheck)

Same problem here: Ubuntu 10.04, Openoffice uses 100% CPU on my dual pentium 4-3200MHz . I don't have any "graphics output" option in my menu.

Impress also affected by this. Turning off anti-aliasing helped a bit (Tools -> Options -> OpenOffice.org -> View -> uncheck 'Use anti-aliasing'.
