Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

When saving an existing file stored on a cifs share, OOo creates an empty file with the same name except an incremental number just before the .xxxwriter, impress an calc at least are impacted.

SO if you are editing a document called MyDoc.odt, on save a document MyDoc0.odt with size 0 is created along with the saved document. When you press save again another is created with name Mydoc1.odt with size 0.

This is the same bug as reported on http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=575899

It occurs first in OO 3.2.0.

I have OO on client side (beta2) Kubuntu Lucid 1:3.2.0-7ubuntu3, on host side Samba (3.4.5) in Debian Squeeze.

Also occurs in Ubuntu.

Saving to the local disk or a sshfs mounted share doesn't have the issue.

Two cases of connecting to a samba share and saving OpenOffice.org 3.2 files with different results ..

CASE 1:
$ nautilus smb://server/share

NO additional incremental files created.

CASE 2:
$ smbmount //server/share /home/ian/shared -o uid=ian,gid=users,user,credentials=/home/ian/.samba_creds,dir_mode=0775,filemode=0775,nounix

Additional incremental files created.

This is running OOo 3.2 on Ubuntu Lucid.

Ian is right, it does not depend on kubuntu.

Currently I work around the problem by using nautilus (in kubuntu) to mount my samba servers. Until this bug occurred I used smb4k.

The difference is of course nautilus uses fuse and the mounted smb share can be found under .gvfs, smb4k uses cifs and mounts under .smb4k.

I've removed the OOo 3.2 that comes with Lucid.

I downloaded the deb version from the OpenOffice.org website - OOo_3.2.0_LinuxX86-64_install_en-US_deb.tar.gz

I'm not getting the blank files created when saving with that version.

Both tell me that they are OpenOffice.org 3.2.0 OOO320m12 (Build9483)

[This is an automatic notification.]

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect 566901

This will help us to find and resolve the problem. Bear in mind that you may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe repository. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your bug report. Thanks in advance!

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Is there a way to pass the 'nobrl' option when mounting under kubuntu? If so does that resolve the problem for you? If that does work I think I have a fix for this issue that will hopefully be able to go into 10.04.1

I used to smbmount using smb4k, but it appears now to be broken.

I can try to do a similar smbount as mentioned by Ian Beardslee above. With and without nobrl. OK?

I'll try tomorrow.

Yes, I just confirmed your theory using debian squeeze client across openvpn to debian squeeze samba server.

Result:
1) Using smbmount //server/share /home/ian/shared -o uid=ian,gid=users,user,credentials=/home/ian/.samba_creds,dir_mode=0775,filemode=0775,nounix spurious files are created as explained above

2) Using sudo smbmount //smurver/intranet /home/ferry/.smb4k -o uid=ferry,gid=exalon,user,dir_mode=0775,filemode=0775,nounix,nobrl (adding the nobrl option) NO spurious files are created.

For the record, smb4k appears to be broken both in debian and ubuntu, but in different ways, so I reverted to smbclient for this test.

Oops clip board error, the actual command in case 1) is sudo smbmount //smurver/intranet /home/ferry/.smb4k -o uid=ferry,gid=exalon,user,dir_mode=0775,filemode=0775,nounix
