Bug Description

Using openoffice.org 2.0.2-2ubuntu5-1 on amd64 I am unable to enter Japanese text using scim + anthy in either an English language session, or in a Japanese language session.

Other applications eg gedit work fine.

To reproduce, install japanese lanugauge support, log in to a japanese session. Open gedit, press control + space. type eg watashi (should look like わたし ) to verify it works. Now open openoffice.org Writer, try to do the same thing, notice it does not work.

This does not appear to be a display issue. There are no problems with the copy & paste of text, or the loading of a file containing Japanese text.

According to the "input method" entry in the help file, openoffice.org only supports IIIMP. IIIMP is provided in Ubuntu by the iiimgcf package (universe). This is a replacement input library, with separate requirements for language support, and does not integrate with SCIM. The package iiimf-htt-xbe provides a XIM capable backend, and should be able to act as a replacement for some aspects of SCIM. Note that Japanese support for IIIMF is provided by canna, rather than anthy.

I believe this bug will be fixed with the implementation of https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+spec/input-methods

This problem is still present in Kubuntu Etch Beta 1. I have tried running the "Language Support" script from the Applications menu and installing support for Japanese. I have the SKIM icon in the toolbar, but cannot input Japanese in Firefox, OpenOffice etc.

This is really a problem for those wanting to input Asian Languagese, so could this bug be assigned to somebody - Pretty please :)

I've done a fresh install of kubuntu knot3, skim can input chinese
characters in Firefox and OOo, all I have done: choose Chinese when I
install, and choose download language support packages.

I have done an install in _English_, run the "Language Support" for Japanese, which installs fine and set keyboard to Japanese.
However, I cannot input Japanese characters in any programs
I have also tried to play around with Scim and Skim, but this still has
no effect

I am using Kubuntu Edgy Beta 1, on a Japanese IBM Thinkpad x32

One funny thing - If you install the entire system in Japanese and then
run language support, japanese input works. (like Mr. Hou has done above) But this is not so good as a workaround as it converts a lot of programs' interface to Japanese.

ya, it's qquite funny, I've encount with the same problem with you,
seems like it's a bug of language-selector. we'd assign it on
language-selector and poke mvo for it :)

This problem still exists in Edgy (final). If you do an English install, you will be unable to input CJK in applications.

Using the steps in this guide, I can always get it to work.

(By the way, should this bug be set as a duplicate of 34282?)

I had this working under Edgy 10, mostly by playing a lot. I had to reinstall so I'm listing the steps I took to get it again. (not all are necasarrily required this is just what I did)

Set up edgy in English
Add Japanese to language support snap in
Configure following in SCIM snap in
    -toggle on = zenkaku_hankaku
    -toggle off = zenkaku_hankaku
remove English/Keyboard in "IMEngine>Global Support ( now only Japanese>Anthy available)

Now at this point it works 50% I forgot what else I had to do but,
Open gedit and right click on the page. Got to Input methods and select SCIM input method.
Japanese/English will now switch on the zenkaku/hankaku key.

I guess all that's left is to set SCIM as default input method, however I'm supposed to be working not surfing ubuntu bug forums so I'll have to hope this is helpful as it is and post again when I have time to play more.

I want to install Ubuntu in Japanese for my in-laws, so I messed around with putting SCIM support on my English laptop to get a feel for it. This HP laptop has Hardy Alpha 2 loaded on it, and I used this guide to install SCIM support for Japanese: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SCIM#fndef-adac221a6fc0e5ff7b3fc2457120b79733a8936b-1 It works amazingly well in terminal, note/word pad, and even the terminal, but OpenOffice programs won't even start. Obviously, there's a global settings compatibility problem. If I install their entire system in Japanese, then I shouldn't have this problem. However, I'd like to get it working on my Eng_US setup first. Is this being worked on for final Hardy 8.04? Thanks!!!

Your problem has two aspects.

The first one is, Hardy Heron is under development, then, this is unstable.
Gutsy and SCIM have problems between them...

I had some problems with SCIM and Gutsy. Then, I reinstalled all and
made a little summary of steps to make it work.

Those are placed int his bug report:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/debian/+source/scim/+bug/77168/comments/7
It is related to accent problems in SCIM but I think the steps are
also useful for you on your system, specially on which packages you
must install. If not, send another note in this thread and I'll try to
check what happens on OOo.

This bug still exists in Gutsy. It is a monumental pain in the arse. I work around it by logging in, in full Japanese mode. This creates its own problems as I'm not that fluent when I have dialog boxes up, which is a shame. Now the fact that it works in a full Japanese local, but not with a English local is annoying.

The same problem exist for Chinese input.

There is a manual solution (require editing config files) at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/language-support-zh/+bug/34282/comments/69

(you can read the whole thread, it's quite instructive).

I created a help page at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SCIM and it's up-to-date for the Gutsy bug, with a slightly less elegant solution than the one Ming Hua advises (you can try both solutions, they both work for Chinese input with scim).

Since you're trying to use scim, it should also work for Japanese and Korean using scim (Japanese users sometimes prefer another method, but I can't remember its name).

The way this bug description evolved in Gutsy might have made this bug a duplicate of Bug #34282 though.

Hope it helps

I've verified that this now works in a current Hardy daily build, probably thanks to Arne's recent scim configuration changes. I performed the following test:

  * boot Hardy daily live CD (20080310)
  * install language-support-input-ja package (from a terminal, as I don't speak Japanese and was having trouble finding my way around the translated UI)
  * log out and allow the live CD to automatically log back in after the ten-second timeout
  * start gedit and oowriter
  * in each, press Shift-Space, type 'watashi', and then Shift-Space again
  * observe output as Yagisan describes (わたし)

I have the same problem as Shoko:

All KDE + firefox apps I have tried so far, work with Japanese input via skim, but none of the OOo applications. The skim icon is present in the task bar but only with ordinary keyboard input mode.
I cannot even open the menu of skim through clicking... It strange because it immediately works again as soon as a different application gets the focus.

My setup is Kubuntu 8.04 (kde-core only), AMD 64 on Intel core duo 2.

Thanks in advance for taking notice of my report.

I tried reinstalling, the result was as follows:
Only installing the japanese-input package was insufficient, after installing skim, scim-qtimm and scim-tables-ja, I got for instance kate and firefox accepting japanese input. However the problem with oowriter remains....
