OO 3.0.1 Locks Up as Soon as the Save from Menu or Toolbar is Clicked

Binary package hint: openoffice.org
Sounds a lot like Bug #58508 from a few years ago but this is on a different release of OO and Kubuntu.
I can get around the problem if I go into the OO options > General > check "Use OpenOffice.org dialogs"
If this is un-checked then I can't save any files or insert pictures in any OO document. OO just locks up hard, often holding the mouse hostage. I can alt+tab to a previously open xterm and do a kill on the OO PID.
The problem just came up after the last set of updates in the last week or two that I applied.
