while opening a open office presentation file the audio kept fading in and out

I have a Toshiba Satellite with an AMD Athlon processor.
I have a Ubuntu 8.10 the Intrepid Ibex - released in October 2008

I opened up an email sent to me with a powerpoint presentation file in open office presentation and it did successfully load the file but when it played the audio the sound kept fading in and out. I know the speakers work as I was listening to audio files and music on them. What I expected it to do was to play the music in the pps file without fading in and out.
