Do you have the language for the document set to English and do you have the dictionary for that language installed?
Tools->Options->Language Settings->Languages
If you don't see an ABC with checkmark beside the language it can't be spellchecked without installing a dictionary first. |

Sorry, I forgot to update on the situation. It appeared in one of the Live CD installs between Alpha 6 and Beta 1 (French install). For Beta 1 I installed the English (simplify bug reporting, etc...) and this issue doesn't appear any more.
