Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

There is a very widely used macro for openoffice called x-ray which is currently at version 5.2. It essentially adds an interactive view of the object model giving similar utility to a code completion feature.

It is distributed as a .sxw file that adds the needed libraries when you click a button.

The macro runs without error, but the dialog box (that the main program displays in) is displayed at an unusably small size.

It works fine with a plain vanilla openoffice installation, but doesn't work with the "ubuntu version".

This issue is documented on the french version of the openoffice forum.

My description of the issue can be found on the english openoffice forum.

It looks fine on Ubuntu hardy (8.04), but my system doesn't have compiz, so either the issue has been fixed or it is related to compiz. If you disable compiz from System->Prefences->Appearance->Visual Effects does it work properly? There is another bug already about compiz not working with some macros, so this may be related to that.

Thanks,

Chris Cheney

I would have never thought about an issue with Compiz. If I go to System-> Preference->Appearance->Visual Effects and set this to NONE, then the macro runs fine. If I even set it to normal, it doesn't work....

This change to NONE makes my system completely unusable though, as all graphics updates become unbearably slow. (typing this text comes in about about one letter every second and a half).

I really like Compiz, and have had very few problems with it. What can I use it it's place (to make my system usable at least)?

Setting it to NONE should definitely not cause it to become slower, my system is actually a lot more responsive (faster) with it set to NONE so that is why I have it set that way. You should file another bug about that so that someone can determine what is going on with your system.

With compiz not running you would be running the regular metacity window manager which doesn't use opengl so should be at least as fast as compiz and in many cases run much faster and uses less power so would likely save battery if run on a laptop as well.
