OpenOffice crashes when importing csv file into calc

Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

The csv file is an address book exported from Outlook Express. The import process into calc works perfectly, but after a few seconds, it crashes and immediately recovers the file. The crash-recover sequence appears to be endless. If, however, I start OpenOffice writer first, I can import the file into calc, edit it and save it with complete success. In fact, once OpenOffice writer has been run, calc no longer crashes! This is with Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon, which is kept up to date at all times. The cpu is Pentium 4 1.7GHz 512M ram on an Aopen motherboard

I can confirm this bug.
Any csv file I can remember opening crashes openoffice as described.

Thanks for the writer workaround. this is working for me as well.

I am running openoffice.org 1:2.3.0-1ubuntu5.3 from gutsy-updates. I created a test csv file and was able to open it fine with calc when writer wasn't running. I also tried removing ~/.openoffice.org2 dir and it still was able to open the file just fine. Can you please attach a simple test case file that exhibits the problem?

Thanks,

Chris Cheney

Hi Chris,
the file that caused the problem was an address book exported from Outlook Express. I don't want to send a file with personal information in it, so when I get a chance, perhaps on Sunday, I'll try to produce a file that exhibits the problem.

Ken,

That will be fine, actually the smaller the file that shows the problem the better.

Thanks,

Chris

Hi Chris,
apologies for not sending the .csv file any sooner. I can't set up a file that produces the problem without including email addresses - if I edit the .csv file, the import works OK, but on a csv file created by an email client, the problem shows itself reliably. Rather than send you an extract from my address book, could I suggest you export some addresses from your own (I use Thunderbird) as a .csv. If this doesn't show the problem, I'll send a small address book to you.
Regards,
Ken Speakman

My email client, evolution, does export as csv it only exports as vcards. I used to use thunderbird until its sorting became completely broken for imap and then switched off of it, since upstream didn't seem to think they were ever going to be able to fix it. If you mangle the usernames in the address book does it still crash? That way you could attach the file without it giving away the users real email addresses.

Hi Chris,
I've found something else that produces a similar effect - it's a powerpoint and it's quite small. It doesn't produce the never-ending loop, but it does crash openoffice.

I believe that this bug has been corrected in Ubuntu hardy openoffice.org 1:2.4.0~rc2-1ubuntu3 so I am marking it as Fix Released. If after upgrading you continue to have problems with this issue then feel free to reopen this bug.

Hmm the powerpoint file doesn't crash my hardy amd64 either. So I am marking this back as FIx Released. I will look into the other bug once it is longer private and find out why it affects the other person (maybe they aren't on up to date hardy).
