inconsistent open office font formatting

Bug Description

While using shortcuts to manually apply font formatting (namely bold, italics, and underline), sometimes Open Office won't apply the styles. That is, I may press CTRL+B to make text bold, and the "bold" button icon won't do anything, and my text doesn't change.

Do you still have this problem on Ubuntu hardy OpenOffice.org 1:2.4.0~rc2-1ubuntu3?

I'm still using Gutsy, and I still have the aforementioned problem. I have since switched to AbiWord on my laptop, where I do most of my word processing, and I don't get the style error there.
