error: duplicate REP tables used

Bug Description

Affix support appears to be broken for the en_ZA locale.

The realtime spell-checking functionality of OpenOffice, Firefox, Pidgin, X-Chat and Evolution doesn't recognize affixes. So "participant" is recognized, but "participants" is not, for example.

In .xsession-errors, I see this:

error: duplicate REP tables used
Failure loading aff file /usr/lib/openoffice/share/dict/ooo/en_ZA.aff
error: duplicate REP tables used
Failure loading aff file /usr/share/myspell/dicts/en_ZA.aff
error: duplicate REP tables used
Failure loading aff file /usr/share/myspell/dicts/en_ZA.aff

I have LANG="en_ZA.UTF-8" set in /etc/default/locale.

Here are the package versions that I think are pertinent:

aspell 0.60.6-1
aspell-en 6.0-0-5.1

I had the same issue with pidgin:

% pidgin
error: duplicate REP tables used
Failure loading aff file /usr/share/myspell/dicts/en_ZA.aff
zsh: segmentation fault pidgin

But in my case it was related to the facebook plugin:

% dmesg | tail
[ 309.408258] pidgin[5288]: segfault at 28 ip 00007f9c8090c952 sp 00007fffa490a390 error 4 in libfacebook.so[7f9c80908000+c000]

Removing the pidgin-facebookchat package resolved my problem for the moment.

So, any suggestions on how to solve this problem? Any further information we can send you?

I can confirm this problem exists on Karmic using Openoffice.

"Failure loading aff file /usr/share/myspell/dicts/en_ZA.aff" is written to the console after launching oowrite from the console.
Simple words such as

I made the error go away (note, I don't consider myself an expert in the affix file format - and thus don't know which south african grammar + spelling rules will be violated ), by copying the en_GB.aff file over the en_ZA.aff file

sudo cp /usr/share/myspell/dicts/en_GB.aff /usr/share/myspell/dicts/en_ZA.aff

it seems that there's a parse error on the existing en_ZA.aff file (and indeed may have something to do with OP's duplicate REP table errors).

While my previous solution works, I was unhappy that it seemed to kludgy.

A little research revealed someone else, who solved it properly:

The fix is to download the myspell en_ZA files from here http://downloads.translate.org.za/spellchecker/

Backup the original files
cd /usr/share/myspell/dicts/

sudo mv en_ZA.aff en_ZA.aff.bak

Unzip the file from translate.org.za, and copy it to /usr/share/myspell/dicts/en_ZA.aff, and do the same for en_ZA.dic

That should give you a working spellchecker in OpenOffice.org

Thanks. I have, since upgrading to Karmic, overwritten the en_ZA affix file with the en_GB copy. To me, both solutions are cludgy. What should happen is that an update should be issued which does this (and anything else that needs to be done at the same time) for the user.

This is to give the user peace of mind that the problem has been fixed correctly. [For example, if you hadn't posted about update en_ZA.dic, I wouldn't have known that also needs updating.]

It's not just kludgy; the kludge will be undone by the next upgrade or
reinstall of the package that installs the file.
