I attach all configuration files:
- /etc/ldap/slapd.conf
- ~/etc/ldap/slapd.conf
- ~/etc/ldap/adressen.ldif

In the original slapd.conf file I inserted an include option in last line which includes my local configuration file. I created a local configuration file for an Evolution LDAP addressbook. Yes I know it's not a clean solution but slapd started... ;)

Error message from dpkg WITH include option in last line:

E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
Während der Paketinstallation sind Probleme aufgetreten. Versuche zu zu lösen:
Richte slapd ein (2.4.11-0ubuntu6) ...
Backing up /etc/ldap/slapd.conf in /var/backups/slapd-2.4.9-0ubuntu0.8.04.1... done.
failed.

Migrating slapd.conf file (/tmp/upgrade_slapd.conf.BCrql31766) to slapd.d failed with the following error while running slaptest:
could not stat config file "/usr/share/evolution-data-server-2.22/evolutionperson.schema": No such file or directory (2)
    slaptest: bad configuration directory!
dpkg: Fehler beim Bearbeiten von slapd (--configure):
Unterprozess post-installation script gab den Fehlerwert 1 zurück
Fehler traten auf beim Bearbeiten von:
 slapd

AFTER commenting out the include option in last line, dpkg returned following error message after installing other packages with Synaptic:

E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
Während der Paketinstallation sind Probleme aufgetreten. Versuche zu zu lösen:
Richte slapd ein (2.4.11-0ubuntu6) ...

failed.

Migrating slapd.conf file (/tmp/upgrade_slapd.conf.BaWgg15162) to slapd.d failed with the following error while running slaptest:
hdb_db_open: database "dc=nodomain": unclean shutdown detected; attempting recovery.
hdb_db_open: database "dc=nodomain": recovery skipped in read-only mode. Run manual recovery if errors are encountered.
unable to open file "/var/run/slapd/slapd.pid": 2 (No such file or directory)

I created a local slapd.conf config file so that it gets not overriden when dist-upgrading Ubuntu.

How about a directory for future Ubuntu versions:

/etc/ldap/slapd.conf.d/

There could be inserted more config files for different database definitions. In my point of view it would be great to introduce these xyz.d/ config directories for every service on the system.

Ok, I just have seen, that there is already a config directory for slapd available: /etc/ldap/slapd.d/
