example applet doesn't work with icedtea Firefox plugin

I tried to load an example applet written for demonstration (see contents of attached tar.gz) in Firefox by opening a html file, which should then start a very simple applet. The html rendered fine except the part occupied by the applet, which remained blank gray.

Tried the same thing with the sun-java6-plugin package on a different machine (but same Ubuntu & Firefox installation), it worked flawlessly.
