When opening TDAmeritrade's Command Center 2.0, a java window opens and then shortly after epiphany crashes. The epiphany developers say it is an IcedTeaPlugin Factory problem.

This is on an F10 system fully up-to-date as of Aug 114 2009.

In epiphany about:plugins says:
IcedTea Java Web Browser Plugin
  File name: IcedTeaPlugin.so
The IcedTea Java Web Browser Plugin 1.5 (fedora-20.b16.fc10-i386) executes Java applets.

I realize that not everyone has a TDAmeritrade account and so this will be difficult to test so let me know if you need help in that regard.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please answer these questions:

* Is this reproducible?
* If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?

This will help us to find and resolve the problem.

Moving to openjdk-6 as it's the icedtea6-plugin that's causing this.

Dave,

Bug is reproducible \ I.E it happens 100% constantly every time.

I haven't ruled out poor coding within the Java App itself, unfortunately it is on an Management System Server so it may be hard to get a copy of the App.

Is there any further Diagnostics I can provide from my end to help narrow down the bug?

P.S this fault does not occur on Java Standard Browser Extension on Windows.

I am not able to confirm the bug without reproducing it. Of course I am also new to Triaging. Let me contact my mentor and ask for his input. Of course another volunteer may be more experienced and better able to help.

Dave,

That is fine, let me know what I can do to help.

Dave Walker (dogatemycomputer) wrote :

helpdesk:

Can you try it again. This time, start firefox from a terminal as follows:

ICEDTEAPLUGIN_DEBUG=true firefox

and then attach the resulting logs. They are either:

/tmp/java.stderr and /tmp/java.stdout
OR
~/.icedteaplugin/java.stderr and ~/.icedteaplugin/java.stdout

Please also scan the files before attaching to make sure there is no personal
info in the logs.

My mentor referred me to the Mozilla team's head Triager who said he would start looking upstream for more information. He could not give me a date/time when he would get back to me but I trust him to get us some more information when he can. I have been annoying him with questions about your bug for a couple of days now. :-)

Sorry for the late reply Dave, VPN woes

Attached is the two logs (3rd one was a double post)

Unfortunately they arnt very verbose which leads me to believe that the plugin was not developed with debugging in mind(such as the mindset of java developers!! =p!)

Unless there is a way to extract more information I feel we may not have much to go on.

My suspicion is that its how IcedTeaplugin engine is handling large data (heh) especially with imaging libraries. This is my suspicion due to the nature of the Applet itself and its characteristics when it works

I am still waiting myself. There really is nothing more I can do without reproducing it. I'm sorry!

Hopefully we will hear from the Mozilla team's head Triager soon. He is trying to reproduce it elsewhere. Of course he also has countless other bug requests to contend with also.

helpdesk (helpdesk) wrote :

Hi Dave,

Not a problem I am working on a few other bugs so happy to wait,

Regards,

This is happening on Ubuntu 9.10 as well with Firefox 3.5.5 and Icedtea Plugin 6b16-1.6.1-3ubuntu1.

There is a new stack trace and debug files here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openjdk-6/+bug/491181

Please let us know if you need any more information.

Thank you for your bug report. This bug has been reported to the developers of the software. You can track it and make comments at: http://icedtea.classpath.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=378
I'm going to mark it as Triaged and wait for upstream to work on this. Thanks for taking the time to make Ubuntu better! Please report any other issues you may find.

Why has the severity been downgraded? The browswer still crashes with this bug.

The old plugin is no longer supported. Please test with the new plugin provided with 1.7 and open a new bug if the issue persists.
