Bug Description

The openafs kernel module builds and installs using m-a, however, when I try to start openafs-client it says:

[12:08:28]kevin@ubuntu:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/openafs-client start
Starting AFS services: openafs afsd.
afsd: All AFS daemons started.
afsd: Can't mount AFS on /afs(22)

I dont know what error 22 is and googling it doesnt seem to help. It worked with the old version of the kernel module in intrepid but this is the first time ive gotten the module to compile on a 2.6.28 kernel.

Attached is my dmesg output. At 333731 (line 1458) is where I stop openafs and it removes the module. There seem to be a lot of errors while doing this; I dont know if its relevant or not. Then at 335498 (line 1498) is when I try and start openafs again.

Im on an amd64 with kernel 2.6.28-11.

Thanks for your bug report.
There was a new openafs upload today in jaunty. Could you check you still have this issue with 1.4.8.dfsg1-3? Thanks!

This is one of those difficult problems where it's working fine for other people, so we need to figure out what's different about your system. One thing to double-check: have you rebooted this system recently? Sometimes OpenAFS doesn't unload entirely cleanly and leaves kernel droppings behind that prevent it from reloading properly. This can be cumulative; lots of loads and unloads will cause more problems.

There's active upstream work to improve unloading the module, but it's a slow process.

So based on Russ's comment I tried reconfiguring openafs-client and I changed my cell from athena to athena.mit.edu and it worked. I guess I just put athena because thats what I always use under /afs/ because its a link to athena.mit.edu and I'm always too lazy to type the rest. I guess this was just a problem of me assuming athena would work and a rather unhelpful error message.

Thanks for everyones help.

It sounds like you may also want to reconfigure openafs-client to use
dynroot as well. If configuring your system to be in a non-existent cell
causes a failure to mount /afs, that probably means dynroot is disabled.

Glad that you got it working!

Glad you got this resolved. I’m closing this bug.

If you’re at MIT you might be interested in looking at Debathena <http://debathena.mit.edu/>, which has packages for automatically configuring AFS (debathena-afs-config) and other Athena services.
