Standard support for Ubuntu 16.04 has ended.

The log files are a bit too terse to hypothesize what may have gone wrong, but a common issue can be a discrepancy between the installed kernel version, and what vmware is expecting.

If this issue re-occurs on newer versions of Ubuntu please file a new bug report with the corresponding log and config files.
