Bug Description

Running clean install of 16.4.1 as a VMware Workstation 12 Pro guest. Install open-vm-tools and open-vm-tools-desktop. You get a full scope of display resolution options and the automatic guest resolution resize functionality.

If you switch to linux-virtual, there by removing the linux-image-extra packages, you lose the the automatic resize and are limited to 6 resolutions of 1176x885 or lower.

This suggests that either open-vm-tools-desktop should have a linux-image-extra dependancy OR the dependent modules needs to be moved into the main kernel.
