No, the translation isn't supposed to be necessary, untranslated strings should simply show up as the English original.
The problem was that the about dialog tried to translate an empty string, which somehow pulled in a whole bunch of translation meta data. You would likely see some "error parsing markup" warning when you ran Onboard from terminal.
I've pushed two fixes to trunk. LANGUAGE=fr ./onboard-settings shows the about dialog correctly now.

Hi marmuta or other Onboard developers,
Do you have any plan to update the package in Ubuntu, the current version in Vivid is still 1.0.0.

Yeah, there've been a bunch of bug fixes, we should really have a new release. Let me work through the remaining bug reports to see what's left to do.

Hi marmuta,

As you may aware, Ubuntu 15.04 feature freeze will happen on Feb 19th. It will be great if we will have a new bug-fix release of onboard in 15.04. Do you think you and your team can make a new release in the near future?

Hi Anthony,
thanks for the reminder and apologies for the delay. We were actually about to create the release last weekend, but it failed testing. Onboard doesn't rise above Dash currently. We now believe this was caused by a recent change in Unity, though, and it looks like there's not much else we can do from our side. Another regression with LibreOffice Writer came up yesterday, but that one I could fix. The release will come real soon (TM) now.

Hi,

Onboard versions 1.1.0, which includes a fix for this bug, has been published today.

You can get it from our stable PPA [1] for trusty, utopic and vivid or you can wait for it to be available in the Ubuntu vivid repositories [2].
