Bug Description
I switched several times between operators and 2g/3g settings in system-settings without any Wifi connection, and at some point the phone stopped connecting to a cellular data network (no network in the indicator)

This sounds similar to bug #1425987.
A few questions...
What was the SIM configuration you used? Was either SIM locked?
You also mention that you switched several times between operators? How? Did you use the System Settings: :Cellular: :Carriers page? How many operators were visible?
Can you still reproduce reliably? The key us being able to fix is first being able to reproduce your scenario. I can't really do this from the information provided so far...
Finally, we recently landed a fix for MTK-based modems which should fix some of the problems that occurred when switching between WiFi and mobile-data.
Also, I added a ofono (Ubuntu-RTM) task as you reported this against an RTM image, not vivid.
