Bug Description

Installing Kubuntu KDE4 RC1 Alternative amd OEM failed on reboot of machine.

CD-ROM iso: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu-kde4/daily/20080415.1/hardy-alternate-amd64.iso

Installed on Lenovo 3000 N200 Centrino Duo core laptop.

Did an OEM install following instructions as per http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/result/1463/232 as follows:

1. Booted from Alternative CD
2. Selected Check CD for defect checking, waited for check to complete (it was OK) and rebooted
3. Installed and rebooted
4. Got the normal Kubuntu desktop

Bug #1: The oem-config-prepare icon did not have any icon image.

5. Installed 1 extra package (tuxpaint)

Bug #2: The package manager did not have any appropriate icons on the left hand side of the package manager application. I believe there should be icons for each of the package groupings.

6. Clicked on the oem-config-prepare icon.

Rebooted to see if the new user setup procedure appears:

Bug #3: Got a blue desktop screen and nothing else. Waiting 5 minutes and still nothing happened so I gave up.

This also happens on i386 with:

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/daily/20081021.2/hardy-alternate-i386.iso

Except for me it was a black X screen with nothing else when it rebooted. All I could see what the black X cursor.

Also, this has been verified to be broken on KVM, VMware 6.5, and bare hardware.

Sounds like basically the same as the corresponding ubiquity breakage (bug 285626).

Colin (King), could you file your package manager issue as a separate bug report, please? If you used Add/Remove..., then that should be on the gnome-app-install package.

Attached is a screenshot of a traceback I saw when restarting the system after running 'oem-config-prepare'.

I see the problem; the frontend passes sys.argv to KCmdLineArgs, although the arguments there have already been parsed. This will fail on all systems.

This bug was fixed in the package oem-config - 1.53

---------------
oem-config (1.53) intrepid; urgency=low

  * KDE frontend:
    - Hardcode command line (including setting the Oxygen style) rather than
      passing sys.argv to KCmdLineArgs, which will include options that KDE
      doesn't understand (LP: #218144).
  * Update translations from Launchpad.
