NVIDIA X Server Settings crash on changing GPU Scaling Method from sctretched to any other option

Bug Description

Binary package hint: nvidia-settings

System:
Toshiba Notebook Satellite S3000-601
NVidia Geforce2 Go with 16MB RAM

Installed graphic driver:
nvidia-96
96.43.17-0ubuntu1

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1) Start program NVIDIA X Server Settings
2) Select from treeview entry
    GPU 0 - (GeForce2 Go)
          DFP-0 - (Nvidia Default Flat Panel)
3) the GPU Scaling Method "Stretched" is selected as default entry on first start of program
4) Click on the button for GPU Scaling Method "Centered" or "Aspect Ratio Scaled" crashes the program without an error message

When ran from console it shows the following message:

The program 'nvidia-settings' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 239 error_code 2 request_code 139 minor_code 19)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
   that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
   To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
   option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
   backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

The scaling option has been removed from newer versions of nvidia-settings. In a changelog I read you should use the different MetaModes (In/Out) to achieve scaling...
