nvidia-settings crashes when attempting to save settings to x conf

Bug Description

Binary package hint: nvidia-settings

For some reason, even though my monitor was detected correctly, the standard screen settings utility will not allow my refresh rate to go above 60hz.

I have therefore attempted to use nvidia-settings as I am using the non free Nvidia driver. However, after changing the refresh rate to 85hz and applying, I then cannot use the button to save options to the xorg.conf file - when I click that button, the app hangs and crashes.

Currently at work, will add more information when I get home.

I didn't have this problem upgrading from a alpha3 version.
But now i have installed alpha5 from the scratch and there it is.

I cannot save the twinview configuration to X-Configuration File.

Is there another way to configure twinview with NVIDIA cards in Hardy?

Found a work around that is good in Hardy and Intrepid. Grabbed the
EnvyNG package
and installed the latest drivers (173.14.12) or later. Then I ran as root
these two commands: 'nvidia-xconfig', and 'nvidia-settings'. In the
settings I setup twinview and then saved to the X Config File,
Restarted X and all was good. Give it a shot

Thanks Jason - I just did a nvidia-xconfig followed by nvidia-settings, and it worked, using the latest 177 drivers on intrepid.
It turns out that when the nvidia drivers are installed, nvidia-xconfig is not run, which is used to create a xorg.conf that nvidia-settings can recognise. Hence, later when it comes to try and modify the existing xorg.conf file (which in my case was the default intrepid one), it doesn't know how to interpret it, and segfaults.

In summary, try a nvidia-xconfig before nvidia-settings!
