This bug affects me since I installed ubuntu (hardy heron).
I have this message at the end of each update, not only for distribution upgrades.
When upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10, the upgrade did not terminate correctly, so 10.10 seems to running, but grub file menu.lst has not been updated. I don't know if the install is complete.
I can't remove the package, it gives the same error message....

my system was running with the 2005 release of nvidia-kernel-common, and I wasn't able to update it neither with synaptic nor with apt-get. Sorted the bug by installing the 20080825+1ubuntu2 version of the package, from a deb package, installed with GDebi.
